Alsergrund, Vienna

Alsergrund is the ninth district of Vienna, Austria, located just north of the first, central district Innere Stadt. It was incorporated in 1862 with seven suburbs. The area is densely populated, with a lot of government-built housing. According to the census of 2001 there were 37,816 inhabitants over 2.99 square kilometres. Many departments of the University of Vienna (main university) are located in Alsergrund, but also the University of Economics and Business Administration (Wirtschaftsuniversitt Wien). There are also many large hospitals, including the biggest in Vienna, the AKH (Allgemeines Krankenhaus, German for General Hospital). See also: Studying in Vienna
