Alliance, Ohio

Alliance is a city located in Mahoning and Stark counties in Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 23,253. The city is the home of Mount Union College.

Geography

Alliance is located at 40°54'48" North, 81°6'29" West (40.913358, -81.108094). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.3 km² (8.6 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 23,253 people, 8,908 households, and 5,665 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,042.7/km² (2,700.1/mi²). There are 9,730 housing units at an average density of 436.3/km² (1,129.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.51% White, 11.19% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.77% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.93% from two or more races. 1.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,908 households out of which 28.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.41 and the average family size is 2.98. In the city the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 15.5% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.3 males. The median income for a household in the city is $30,078, and the median income for a family is $37,011. Males have a median income of $31,033 versus $20,063 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,185. 18.0% of the population and 12.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.8% of those under the age of 18 and 10.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
