Alfred Eisenstaedt

Alfred Eisenstaedt (December 6, 1898 - August 24, 1995) was a photographer and photojournalist. He was born in Dirschau, West Prussia (now Tczew, Poland) and emigrated to the United States in 1935, where he remained until his death, living in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. Eisenstaedt worked as a photographer for Life magazine from 1936 to 1972. He is most renown for his candid photographs, which he made using a 2 1/4 by 2 1/4 inch Rolleiflex twin-lens reflex camera. His most famous photograph is of an American sailor kissing a young woman on V-J Day in Times Square in 1945. Since 1999, the Alfred Eisenstaedt Awards for Magazine Photography have been administered by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
