Alfred (Town), New York

Alfred is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 5,140. The Town of Alfred was incorporated in 1808 from part of the Town of Angelica. There is also a village named Alfred in the center of the town. Alfred University and Alfred State College are located near the Village of Alfred.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 81.8 km² (31.6 mi²). 81.7 km² (31.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,140 people, 996 households, and 468 families residing in the town. The population density is 62.9/km² (163.0/mi²). There are 1,134 housing units at an average density of 13.9/km² (36.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.79% White, 3.46% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 2.47% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. 2.26% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 996 households out of which 21.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.3% are married couples living together, 4.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 53.0% are non-families. 33.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.99. In the town the population is spread out with 8.3% under the age of 18, 66.8% from 18 to 24, 9.7% from 25 to 44, 10.2% from 45 to 64, and 5.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 21 years. For every 100 females there are 135.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 138.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $32,067, and the median income for a family is $57,159. Males have a median income of $28,667 versus $29,821 for females. The per capita income for the town is $10,785. 22.5% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.3% of those under the age of 18 and 3.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
