Alberta General Election, 1921The 5th general election for the Province of Alberta, Canada, was held on July 18, 1921 to elect members of the Alberta legislature. The Liberal Party of Charles Stewart, which had governed the province since its creation in 1905, was defeated unexpectedly by the United Farmers of Alberta, an agricultural lobby organization that was contesting its first elections. The UFA had no leader, and its president, Henry Wise Wood, declined to take the leadership and become Premier. The UFA's third choice, its vice president, Herbert Greenfield, agreed to do so, and sought election to the legislature in a by-election. The Liberals had, in fact, won a larger share of the popular vote (about 34%, compared to 29% for the UFA), but the first past the post electoral system used in Alberta and else where in Canada enabled the UFA to win 38 seats, compared to the Liberals' 11 seats. | owspan="2"|Party | rowspan="2"|Party Leader | rowspan="2"|# of candidates | colspan="3"|Seats | colspan="3"|Popular Vote | | lign="center"|Previous | align="center"|After | align="center"|% Change | align="center"|# | align="center"|% | align="center"|Change | | United Farmers | Herbert Greenfield | align="right"|45 | align="right"| n.a. | align="right"| 38 | align="right"| n.a. | align="right"| 86,250 | align="right"| 28.92% | align="right"| n.a. | | Liberal | Charles Stewart | align="right"| 61 | align="right"| 34 | align="right"| 11 | align="right"| -67.6% | align="right"| 101,584 | align="right"| 34.07% | align="right"| -14.07% | | Labour | | align="right"| 10 | align="right"| - | align="right"| 4 | align="right"| | align="right"| 33,987 | align="right"| 3.17% | align="right"|+7.87% | | Independent | | align="right"| 18 | align="right"| 2 | align="right"| 4 | align="right"| +100% | align="right"| 28,794 | align="right"| 9.66% | align="right"| +3.83% | | Conservative | | align="right"|13 | align="right"| 19 | align="right"| - | align="right"| -100% | align="right"| 32,734 | align="right"| 10.98% | align="right"| -30.81% | | Independent Labour | | align="right"| 7 | align="right"| n.a. | align="right"| - | align="right"| | align="right"| 10,733 | align="right"| 3.06% | align="right"| n.a. | | Labour Socialist | | align="right"|2 | align="right"| n.a. | align="right"| - | align="right"| | align="right"| 2,628 | align="right"| 0.88% | align="right"| n.a. | | Independent Liberal | | align="right"| 1 | align="right"| n.a. | align="right"| - | align="right"| | align="right"| 1,467 | align="right"| 0.49% | align="right"| n.a. | | Total | | 157 | 58 | 61 | +5.2% | 298,177 | 100.00% | | | align="center" colspan="9"|Source: Elections Alberta | Notes: "Previous" refers to to standings at previous election, not to standings in the Legislature at dissolution. n.a. = not applicable - the party was not recognized in the previous election See also List of Canadian political parties
