Akan, Hokkaido

Akan (阿寒町, -chō) is a town located in Akan district, Kushiro subprefecture, Hokkaido. As of September 30, 2004 it has an estimated population of 6518 and an area of 739.25 km. The name comes from an Ainu word meaning "Eternal" or "unchanging".

History

  • 1887 The main town hall for Akan District is established
  • 1923 Becomes a second-class municipality
  • 1937 Tsurui Village split off
  • 1940 Akan becomes a first-class municipality
  • 1957 Akan Village becomes Akan Town
