Ajax, Ontarioright Ajax (2003 population 82,000) is a town located in the Golden Horseshoe of south central Ontario, Canada. (Latitude: 43.8509, longitude: -79.0203) The town was first incorporated in 1941 when a Defence Industries Limited shell plant was constructed and a townsite grew around the plant. The town was named after the British light cruiser HMS Ajax. Streets in the town are named after the ship's crew. Although the plant closed when the war ended in 1945, the town survived. Today, Ajax is a suburb of Toronto and is part of the Greater Toronto Area. Ajax is also home to the Rouge Valley East Hospital, formerly known as the Ajax-Pickering Hospital. It is part of the Regional Municipality of Durham. External links
