It was developed by Ensemble Studios and published in November 2002 by Microsoft. AoM departs from its predecessors' attempts at historical accuracy by including mythological creatures and powers, as did Burden of the Tsar, Heroes of Might and Magic, and Warcraft, its popular competitors. Accordingly, mythological figures such as minotaurs can be summoned to play a role in slaughtering those who don't believe in them; it is much different from the original series. Unlike Age of Empires, only three civilizations are available to control: The Greeks, the Egyptians, and the Norse. However, each civilization chooses between three "major gods" to worship, each granting the player specific bonuses. The Major Gods are: Greek Egyptian Norse Age of Mythology also introduces the concept of a "God power". Players get four god powers per game, one for each age through which the player advances. These powers can be invoked only once apiece during each game. However, correct usage of god powers can heavily influence the outcome of the game. The expansion introduces a new civilization: the mythical Atlanteans, worshippers of the Titans. The three original civilizations of Age of Mythology are included in the expansion, for those who would choose the familiar gameplay of the original. Due to events in the original Age of Mythology storyline, the people of Atlantis have lost their faith in the Greek gods, instead erecting temples to the Titans. Therefore, the Atlantean major gods are actually the Titans Kronos, Oranos, and Gaia. One of the heroes of the Atlanteans is Arkantos. Supposedly he set out for Troy, became embroiled in a war and liberated an island on the way home. Atlantean citizens are slower and more expensive to build than other civilizations' citizens. However, they gather resources faster and are stronger than other citizens. The Atlanteans also differ in that they have no "Hero" units. Rather, any Atlantean unit, including a citizen, can be upgraded to hero status. Atlantean god powers are generally less useful than other civilizations' powers, but they can be used several times throughout the game. Aside from these changes, gameplay is very similar to the original Age of Mythology, with two notable exceptions: It is possible to create one very powerful "Titan" unit in the final age of a game. According to the in-game documentation, the only practical way to destroy a titan unit is with a large number of hero units or another titan. The other exception is the new button auto queue, which makes your buildings automatically queue up a new villager or soldier to the production queue as fast as the last one is created. Ensemble Studios says that this was implented to make players win from strategy, not from fast clicks, although this button had a very negative effect on the more experienced players, and that along with the new civilization Atlanteans that required very little attention to economy, these additions were considered mistakes by the experts, causing many of them to leave the community.
