Adams County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of 2000, the population is 31,151. Its name is in honor of the second President of the United States, John Adams. Its county seat is Hastings6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,461 km² (564 mi²). 1,459 km² (563 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,151 people, 12,141 households, and 7,964 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (55/mi²). There are 13,014 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.54% White, 0.64% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 1.60% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.99% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 4.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 12,141 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.40% are married couples living together, 8.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.40% are non-families. 28.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.00. In the county the population is spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 11.90% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 21.70% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 96.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males. The median income for a household in the county is $37,160, and the median income for a family is $45,620. Males have a median income of $29,842 versus $21,236 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,308. 9.30% of the population and 5.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.40% of those under the age of 18 and 6.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
