Adams County, Mississippi

Adams County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 34,340. Its name is in honor of the second President of the United States, John Adams. Its county seat is Natchez6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,259 km² (486 mi²). 1,192 km² (460 mi²) of it is land and 67 km² (26 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.34% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 34,340 people, 13,677 households, and 9,409 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (75/mi²). There are 15,175 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (33/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 46.04% White, 52.76% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 13,677 households out of which 31.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.80% are married couples living together, 21.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.03. In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 25.60% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 86.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.10 males. The median income for a household in the county is $25,234, and the median income for a family is $29,591. Males have a median income of $30,260 versus $20,383 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,778. 25.90% of the population and 22.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 36.80% of those under the age of 18 and 19.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
