Adams County, IowaAdams County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 4,482. Its county seat is Corning, Iowa6. History Adams county was identified by the state legislature in 1851 and named in honor of the second President of the United States, John Adams, or his son, the sixth President, John Quincy Adams (sources differ). The county was finally organized and separated from Pottawattamie County on March 12, 1853. Its original size was later reduced by the creation of Montgomery and Union Counties. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,102 km² (425 mi²). 1,097 km² (424 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.44% water. Adjacent counties Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,482 people, 1,867 households, and 1,235 families residing in the county. The population density is 4/km² (11/mi²). There are 2,109 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.91% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.18% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,867 households out of which 28.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 5.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.80% are non-families. 30.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.91. In the county the population is spread out with 23.90% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 24.10% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 21.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males. The median income for a household in the county is $30,453, and the median income for a family is $40,030. Males have a median income of $26,510 versus $20,645 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,550. 9.30% of the population and 6.40% of families are below the poverty line.
