Ackerman, Mississippi

Ackerman is a town located in Choctaw County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,696. It is the county seat of Choctaw County.

Geography

Ackerman is located at 33°18'41" North, 89°10'29" West (33.311400, -89.174745). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 5.9 km² (2.3 mi²). 5.8 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.44% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,696 people, 711 households, and 430 families residing in the town. The population density is 291.0/km² (752.7/mi²). There are 781 housing units at an average density of 134.0/km² (346.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 62.97% White, 34.85% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 1.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 711 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.8% are married couples living together, 17.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% are non-families. 37.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 3.00. In the town the population is spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 81.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 76.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $21,287, and the median income for a family is $30,511. Males have a median income of $30,588 versus $20,739 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,486. 24.7% of the population and 17.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 33.2% of those under the age of 18 and 20.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
