Achaean League
The
Achaean League
was a
confederation
of
Greek
city states
in
Achaea
, a territory on the northern coast of the
Peloponnese
. An initial confederation existed during the
5th
through the
4th century BC
. The Achaean League reformed early in the
3rd century BC
and played a political and military role in dealings with
Macedonia
,
Sparta
, and others. The
Romans
under
Lucius Mummius
defeated the Achaeans, razed
Corinth
and dissolved the league in
146 BC
. Lucius Mummius received the
cognomen
Achaicus
("conqueror of Achaea") for his role.
