Abrahamic God

The three so-called Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam have in common many beliefs about God. The term "Abrahamic God" is a convenient shorthand for "God as believed in by the Abrahamic religions". According to Genesis (12:1), God revealed himself to Abram, commanded him to leave the city of Haran, where he lived, and set on a journey to promised land. Abram obeyed and God confirmed his covenant with him by changing his name into Abraham. Part of this covenant was also a ritual circumcision of Abraham's descendants. God promised Abraham that he will be "a father of many nations" (Genesis 17:5). Abraham later had two sons: Ishmael with his maid-servant Hagar and Isaac with his wife Sara. Both Jews and Arabs claim that they are descendants of Abraham - the first take Isaac for their forefather, the latter Ishmael. God revealed to Moses in Egypt introduced himself as "the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." (Exodus 3:6) Christians who are not of Jewish origin consider Abraham their spiritual forefather: "He is the father of all who believe but have not yet been circumcised, in order that righteousness might be credited to them. And he is also the father of the circumcised who not only are circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised." (Romans 4:11-12) Being a descendant of Abraham is in Christian view not a matter of origin, but a matter of faith. In Islam, Ibrahim is considered one of the first and most important prophets, prototype of a true Muslim: "We believe in God, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma'il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to God (in Islam)." (Qur'an 2:136)

In conclusion, Abrahamic God is a term for divinity that revealed itself to Abraham and later developed into the only sovereign God, Lord of Heavens and Earth in monotheistic terms of Abrahamic religion.
