Aalter is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Aalter proper, Bellem, Lotenhulle and Poeke. On January 1st, 2004 Aalter had a total population of 18,672 (9,351 males and 9,321 females). The total area is 81.92 km² which gives a population density of 227.93 inhabitants per km².
