1965 Atlantic Hurricane Season

The 1965 Atlantic hurricane season was an ongoing event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation. It officially started June 1, 1965, and lasted until November 30, 1965. The most notable storm of the season was Hurricane Betsy. Betsy made landfall twice, once in extreme southern Florida, and again in Louisiana near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Betsy is one of the worst storms on record in the United States, killing 76 and causing $1.42 billion in damage ($8.5 billion in 2000 dollars). The other storms of 1965 were much less damaging, with Tropical Storm Debbie causing $25 million (1965 dollars) in damage to Mobile, Alabama. Additionally, an unnamed tropical storm formed in the Gulf of Mexico and made landfall near Panama City, Florida. Heavy rain was associated with the storm, but no deaths or damage.
