Many sporting events did not take place because of World War II. - January 28: Hall of Fame election: Baseball writers fail to elect a new inductee. Frank Chance, Rube Waddell, and Ed Walsh come closest, but none gets the required three-fourths of the vote. Voting is heavily divided, strongly favoring earlier candidates.
- April 25: The Hall of Fame Committee, which had promised at least 10 long-awaited inductees from the 19th century, responds to the deadlocked writers' voting by primarily choosing popular candidates whose careers bridged the turn of the century: Roger Bresnahan, Dan Brouthers, Fred Clarke, Jimmy Collins, Ed Delahanty, Hugh Duffy, Hughie Jennings, King Kelly, Wilbert Robinson and Jim O'Rourke.
- World Series: Detroit Tigers defeated Chicago Cubs, 4 games to 3.
