1916 Atlantic Hurricane SeasonThe 1916 Atlantic hurricane season was an ongoing event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation. It officially began on June 1, 1916 and ended on November 30, 1916. 1916 was a fairly active season, especially for the time. Fourteen tropical cyclones formed during the course of the year. Eleven hurricanes formed. Six of those were major hurricanes, all of them of Category 3 strength. The first hurricane of the season had a track eerily similar to that of Hurricane Camille. It made landfall as a Category 3 near Gulfport, Mississippi. The damage was around $3 million but the amount of deaths was not recorded. A weak hurricane hit New Bedford, Massachusetts. Another weak hurricane came ashore near Charleston, South Carolina. A Category 3 major hurricane hit Jamaica as a Category 2 and then hit Padre Island, Texas. Another weak hurricane hit Puerto Rico and later another one hit northern Belize. A major hurricane hit Pensacola in October. This storm was a fast moving one so the damage was never recorded, but a ship sank offshore, killing 20 people. The last storm of the season was a Category 1 that passed through the Florida Keys that November. See Also
