Maracaibo Lake Lake Maracaibo is not, in the true sense a lake, as it has a mouth opening entering the Caribbean. Due to this the water is a mixture of sea and fresh water. All of the oil exported from Maracaibo, from the lake's oil platforms and the local oil refineries, leaves on oil carrying tanker ships on its journey to the US and other oil importing countries.
