Johnstown The town of Johnstown about 60 miles east of Pittsburgh Pa was very prosperous In Its days, Much wealth was Has came out of this town .. The days of the booming steel mills has gone only a few mills remain... Theres alot of history That still remains. Johnstown Is well known for It devestating floods In past history and up to 1977, Johnstown has suffered 3 big blows from floods. The flood of 1898 which killed 2,209 from a dam that was built for recreation(Southfork Fishing and Hunting Club) Located In Saint Micheals, Pa for big shots at that time. The club had 61 members, People like Andrew Carnegie, Andrew Mellon and many more wealthy Folks.. It Is know a called Johnstown Flood Memorial atracts many tourists.The flood of 1936 was caused from melting snow and Ice, Now for the flood of 1977 (Great Flood Of 77") I would of been I guess 6 years old at that time, we were living In Pinedale, Wyo. at that time, My mother was watching Days of our Lives and over the screen It broke Through that Johnstown has flooded agian!! I don't recall a whole lot of this but My mind was refreshed from my mother and father anyways we headed right to Johnstown within no time, My whole family lives there... after a recorded 11.82 inches of rain feel in "2 hours" 6 dams had burst, the water streaming Into the Conemaugh Vlley 74 people died in which 7 where family members.... Anyways Johnstown has alot of things for a tourist to check out ... One of the worlds Largest, steepest (Guinniss book of world record has it lsted as the largest vehicular Incline Plane) Is located In Johnstown, was built In 1891 following the flood for people to get to higher ground.. It Is a nice Ride to the top .. Where there Is a restaraunt, Ice cream, souvenir and gift shop.. At night a great lazer light show. The achitecture of our buildings In downtown johnstown at something to see also. Around Johnstown there are 3 State Parks that come to mind "Keystone State Park", "Prince Gallitzin State Park" and "Kooser State Park" which offer Boating, Fishing and Swimming. There are Many rivers and lakes for Rafting, Canoeing and Kayaking.. For the racing Fans we got about 5 Speedways, and for winter months we got many places for skiers to enjoy.... Johnstown and within a 20 mile radius Has many historical land marks, Museums, Villages, and alot of old bridges .. so If your ever passing through stop on In and enjoy what johnstown area has to offer
