Delaware

Delaware is situated about half an hour north of Columbus.  It contains a beautiful downtown full of old buildings from the 1880s and 1890s in the Greek revival style.  Several streets of stately Victorian homes also exist in the city, several of them on the National Register of Historic Places.  President Rutheford B. Hayes is from Delaware, though his birthplace has long since vanished, with only a plaque outside a BP gas station bearing testament to its existence.  The town is also home to Ohio Wesleyan University, which contains several notable buildings, particularly Elliot Hall, which was built in 1833 in the Greek revival style and is the original building on campus.  Harness racing fans know delaware as the home of the annual Little Brown Jug harness race, the premire event of the sport, which has been held here every year since 1954.
