Las Cruces

Las Cruces is actually the second largest city in New Mexico, and Dona Ana County is one of the most populous in the state. Agriculture (cotton, pecans, lettuce, onions, soy, and grains) is still the major income for the area, though it is also home to New Mexico State University. The city has changed rapidly in the past ten years, becoming a more commercial crossroads, offering shopping, historical sites, and a breathtaking view (from anywhere in town) of the Organ Mountains. Hiking trails extend into the mountains east of town, and everything from desert to 9000 foot forests (with great skiing in the winter) are within an hour and a half drive. Culturally and historically important, the city offers many amenities for tourism, but is probably best enjoyed as a stop on the way rather than a destination. Local restaurants offer great Mexican food, but are disappearing as fast as the coporate eateries are moving in. Best to see the city while it still has some of it's original character and flavor. Soon, it'll look just like every other part of the new west, which is a shame; it's a wonderful place, with that rough edge of the old west and the stunning visuals of an exotic location.
