Maui There is no public transportation on the island and so when visiting, it is necessary to rent a car. Nearly all the major U.S. rental car companies have counters at Kahului airport. It is always a good idea to reserve a car ahead of time. Ask the company you rent from to provide you with the maps to get you around the island. The main tourist haunts are Lahaina and Kaanapali in west Maui and Kihei and Wailea in south Maui. The road to Hana Make sure you read your agreement on your rental vehicle carefully. Most renal companies do not allow you to take your car through the "backside" of Hana - the south road to Hana. Although it is more scenic the road's terrain isnt meant for 2-wheel drive vehicles (most rental cars). Also cars with low ground clearance will get dinged up. And remember, any damage repair comes out of your pocket; no insurace will cover.
