Western Isles - The Long Island

Names can be misleading out here. For instance the Long Island is not one island but a chain leading from Lewis in the north to beyond Barra in the south. On the other hand, the Isle of Lewis has a land boundary with the Isle of Harris, the two together forming one island.

The scenery is spectacular and it is possible to get island hopscotch tickets from Caledonian MacBrayne [www.calmac.co.uk] which cut the cost of going to South Uist from Oban on the mainland, from Lochmaddy in North Uist, connected by bridges and causeways to South Uist, to Tarbert in Harris and then from Stornoway in Lewis to Ullapool on the mainland. There are other hopscotch routes involving Uig on the NW coast of Skye, Barra a particularly attractive island south of South Uist or both.
