Madrid One of the beauties of Madrid are its mountain resorts, only about 55 km away from the city. This is the lovely place for the madrileños, where they are going during the weekend or for a day and relax from the stress and the noise of the big town. In the mountains, you will see the charm of the pine's forests, of the high-mountains lakes, of the beautiful paths or of the cows grazing quietly without wondering about their crazy cousins. If you want to spend only one day in the mountain, recommended routes will be the Camino Schmidt from Puerto de Navacerrada to Puerto de la Fuenfria; from Cercedilla to Puero de la Fuenfria , from Cotos to the big lake of Peñalara or to the lake Laguna de los Pajaros. In winter, the last route is not recommended, because there is a lot of ice. You can take profit of a good lunch in one of the cheep restaurants in Puerto de Navacerrada, Cotos or Cercedilla. In those places there are also hotels and mountain's refuges, where you can sleep for about 3.000 Pts a night. The mountain area is, generally speaking, quite safe. Except for some wild boars, you won’t see a lot of other wild animals. A mandatory day trip starts visiting El Escorial, a pretty village wich has the official mausoleum of the Royal Family into the Palace of San Lorenzo. You should visit as well the garden's palace: La Casita del Principe. Near El Escorial is the majestic Valle de Los Caidos, a monument to the victims of the Spanish Civil War and the spectacular grave of the former spanish dictator Francisco Franco.
