El Rocio This is an exceptional village for several reasons. The one which most inhabitants would give is that it is the destination for an annual romero or pilgrimage. There is a brotherhood connected with this which owns nearly all property in the village. For those not into pilgrimage it is still a great place, being alongside a wonderful piece of water which forms part of the magnificent Cota de Doñana National Park. This is covered with exciting birds and marsh mares wander between islets. Thirdly the roads in the village are kept covered in fairly deep sand where the prints of horses seem far more in keeping than those of tyres.
