Ekaterinburg The upper part of the shield is in the shape of a fortress, as Ekaterinburg was a fortress during the first years of its existence. The wavy azure line at the bottom of it is the river Iset, which connects the history and the present, Europe and Asia. The bear is a European symbol, the sable is an Asian one. Moreover even during Demidovs' times the sable was the trademark of the Urals metal. The animals are not within the borders of the shield showing their tongues and baring their teeth v such a demonstration of an aggression can be explained as they are defending the city. The golden ribbon at the very bottom of the emblem is considered to characterize Ekaterinburg as a metropolitan city.
