PontassieveThe footpaths covering some areas of the Commune of Pontassieve have been mapped and are maintained by the Italian Alpine Club (CAI), and the footpaths of the SO.F.T. (Sorgenti Trekking Firenze) and local excursion groups (GEO) are maintained by the Mountain Community. These paths are marked with white and red signs or yellow signs: West Sector, CAI footpaths, Nos. 2, 3 & 4 Footpath n. 2 starts from the Passo Croci dell’Alberaccio area (intersection with footpath 00), crosses the road at the Passo della Catena and passes through cultivated areas and pine woods towards Poggio Pratone (702m ) with a panoramic view of Florence: here it joins the footpath no. 3 which descends to the le Falle area. Footpath no. 4 leads to the Castello di Monteloro, 480m, and the Romanesque Pieve. North Ridge, CAI footpaths Nos. 00, 8, 5 & 4 Footpath no. 00 starts at Montesenario and continues towards the ridge of Monte Giovi. At Peretola there is a short and steep connecting path to n. 4. After a pleasant walk through the woods overlooking the North face, we reach the Cascina di Monterotondo [here footpaths no. 5 & 3 branch off], the path rises towards the hill of the ancient Tower of Monterotondo, and then descends through meadows towards Aceraia [where footpath no. 7 branches off]. At this point there is a steep uphill section leading to the peak of Monte Giovi, 992m, with a wide view over the Mugello area and the Chianti mountains. Footpath no. 00 then descends to the chapel of S. Giusto and along a rocky road to Acone. Here it goes northwards and descends in an eastwards direction to the Uscioli river and the River Sieve. From footpath no. 00 many other paths branch off, including no. 8 which leads to the Santuario della Madonna del Sasso (566m) and then continues downhill along an ancient paved road as far as S. Brigida, where there is an intersection with footpath no. 5 which climbs among the bushes of cistus laurinus (flower of the Madonna) only to be found in Italy in this area, until it reaches the footpath 00 on the ridge. Please note that footpaths nos. 00, 4, 8 and 5 cross the Natural Protected Area of Local Interest (ANPIL) of Poggio Ripaghera-Santa Brigida, which has also been named as a Site of Community Interest, part of the European Ecological Network "Natura 2000". North-East Sector: CAI Footpaths nos. 10, 11, 11b, 12, 15, 13, 17 & 14 Footpath no. 11 descends towards Barbiana and Vicchio, no. 15 goes towards Dicomano, no. 12 is in the direction of Montauto and San Martino a Scopeto (Vicchio), no. 17 starts at Acone, travels through Poggio Lupaio and then descends through shady woods into the valley of the Uscioli river until it reaches footpath no. 00. Central Hills, CAI Footpaths nos. 7, 6 & 16 Footpath no. 7 rises from Pontassieve (80m), behind the town along the Via del Capitano. It then follows the rural roads which rise towards Poggio Bardellone (490m) covered with pines and oaks. The footpath then follows the ridge that divides the Arno Valley from the Sieve Valley, passing by a mediaeval tabernacle and a Romanesque Pieve, and then by the ruins of the Montefiesole castle. It then reaches the Monterifrassine (368m) road and follows the surfaced road in a North direction, passing through Tigliano and the Hills. [connection with footpath n. 16]. It then descends to Galiga, where it goes uphill to the church and then through calanques until it reaches the country road leading to the Aceraia Cross (648m) [crossing footpath no. 6]. After 1 km it connects with footpath no. 00 following the main ridge. Footpath no.16 descends from the Footpath of the Hills [no.7] to Montalto Bianco and then into the valley of the Argomenna River. It then rises again to the high plain of the Castel d’Acone and then rises steeply to the town of Acone (477m). Communal Footpath GEO A - From the Sieci railway station, we go up the hill and around the grounds of a mediaeval-style presbytery. We then continue up the side of the Sieci valley, through rural roads and footpaths until we reach the Poggio delle Carpinete (302m). Then there is a steep descent into Molino del Piano, which we walk through until we reach the church, where there is an old road leading to the Torre a Decima Castle. The path then rises up the east side of the hill until it reaches the ruins of the Castello di Monte di Croce, and descends to Fornello, (401m). After crossing the municipal road, a steep rural road and the path take us up to the Cascina della Collina. After descending to the Galiga road [footpath 7] there is a section in a northwards direction which then turns sharp right towards Pagnalle, later descending into the valley of the Argomenna River, which it follows for a pleasant stretch, past ancient bridges and mills [and the crossing point with footpath no. 10], until it reaches the road for Montebonello, and thence to the Rufina railway station, along the footpath to the left of the Argomenna river.
