Liguria

Liguria was an important region for the passages of the ancient pilgrims and for the modern tourists on the way from Compostela, from Provence, and going down to Rome. The pilgrims - and now the modern tourists - were generally walking along the coast, where people used to live, from Ventimiglia , to Albenga which churches form one of the most ancient centers of christianity and where joining people coming from the mountains or the north of Europe was coming down through valleys like the Arroscia valley. From Ceriale a point on the Via Julia Augusta passage to Genoa with its important palaces and churches. And from here to The Cinque Terre and to Rome.

Pilgrimage history goes back to ancient times where also the nearby island of Gallinara Island and Parks, now Parks where between the 4th and the 6th century monasteries founded by the Benedictines becoming so outpost of Christianity in Liguria. For this occasion many old beautiful churches and buildings all around Liguria have been restored to allow all the interested tourists and modern pilgrims to know ancient and modern uses together with very interesting historical, religious and social aspects.
