Arenzano

In the early Middle Ages the stream Lerone represented the border between the Aleramica (Cogoleto) and the Obertenga (Arenzano) Marchland. In the Middle Ages the two villages developed according to an urban structure, which took into consideration the topography of the locality: Cogoleto extended along the coast with the disposition typical of the Ligurian sea villages; Arenzano, on the contrary, consisted in two parts: one along the coast, the other one declining along the hilly slopes. Both entrusted their defence to two castles situated near the sea, still existing in the last century.

From the beginning of the 13th century, they were part of the Genoese possessions, even if Cogoleto from the administrative point of view was united to Varazze and Arenzano to Voltri. Especially in Arenzano a flourishing shipbuilding industry developed, and was very active till the 18th century.

At present the small town is an elegant summer holiday resort, with beautiful villas surrounded by parks and gardens, among which the historical Villa Sauli Pallavicini. Besides it has got an equipped touristic harbour.
