Erfurt Of all Germany's large cities, it is Erfurt, which is most redolent of prewar Germany. Although is has lost a couple of important monuments in bombing raids, it was otherwise little damaged in World War II, while its streets of grandioseturn-of-the-century shops were saved by the communist authorities from the developers who would have demolished them had the city been in the western part of Germany.
