Hameln Hameln - the famous town of the Pied Piper legend is situated about 50 km south west of Hannover, the state capital of Lower Saxony in the North of the Federal Republic of Germany. As well as the German name "Hameln" the town is also known as "Hamelin" and "Hamlin" to the English speaking world. Located in the centre of the Weserbergland, Hamlen economically important and a nice tourist attraction. This hilly region extends on both sides of the river Weser from its source (where the rivers Fulda and Werra meet) from the town of Hannoversch Münden down to the region of Minden. The Pied Piper's town has about 59.000 inhabitants, about 30% of whom live in the 12 associated boroughs. The town hosts some 2 million day visitors per year and over 200.000 visitors per year who stay overnight. In the carefully reconstructed old town centre you can admire the numerous Weser Renaissance-style buildings - for example the Rattenfängerhaus, or Pied Piper’s house originally built in 1602/3, the Dempterhaus dating from 1607/8, the Leisthaus from 1585-89 and the Hochzeitshaus from 1610-17.
