Berchtesgaden 100 Kilometer south of Munich this was Hitlers Eagles Nest. Not much of those days remains, and now it is mainly the extreme beautiful scenery that makes this an attractive place to visit. Berchtesgades is beautiful in the winter...the area is host to many cross-country skiing opportunities and is a great weekend getaway if you need a break from city life. Gästehaus Mitterweinfeld (www.mitterweinfeld.de) is a charming option...not sure how convenient they are for a non-german speaking guest, but the location is quite nice. The rooms have private baths and are crips and spacious.
