Heidelberg Heidelberg Castle alone is a reason for visiting the city. This castle, designed mostly in the Renaissance style, is considered one of the most important cultural monuments in Germany. Several hundred thousand people visit per year. The Castle Garden (hortus palatinus) around the castle is another major attraction. The University Library was erected from 1901 to 1905 using motifs of the so called "Deutschmanierismus" (an ornamental style of German architecture dating back to the late 16th century) and combining them with elements of the "Jugendstil" (l'art nouveau style).
