Tskhavati

The village Tskhavati is located in the Historical Shida Kartli, ksani gorge, in Akhalgori district, on a high mountain. Tskhavari monastery is situated outside the village, on a woody field surrounded by an enclisure. It comprises the main church (9th c.), the minor church (10th c.), two-storied bell-tower, and other damaged buildings. the main church belongs to the type of aisless vaulted churches with contemporary apseless annexes on the whole length of northern and southem exterior wall; southern annex is divided into two parts - a long western compartment and a short eastern one (the latter is accessible from the interior of the naos only). the naos is terminated by a restangular chancel in the East. it is crowned by a conch with the three zones of squinch-like transitional construction.

Longitudinal walls are articulated by means of two pairs of pilasters and four pairs of blind arches resting on the former and the wall corbels. The church is built of large and medium size cobble, from the exterior walls, the western one is decorated by three window erminations with crosses. 14th c. murals are partially presserved in the church. the church is severely damaged, the vault is collapsed. Walls split by enormous cracks are presently reinforced with injection solution, temporary roofing is arranged.
