Troyes Located on the banks of the Seine river, at 170 km from Paris (1h30 by train), Troyes, historical capital of Champagne, has a lot to offer to foreign visitors. Home of the Celtic tribe the "Tricasse" (IInd century-BC), City of Augustobona under the Roman Empire, Troyes became the capital of the county of Champagne in the Xth century, and kept an important position in the Kingdom of France until the XVIth century. Meeting point between merchants from all over medieval Europe with its fairs, leading religious town, these prestigious times have left many testimonies that can still be seen and admired nowadays. The old city center, with its shape of a champagne cork, is famous for its 16th century's half-timbered houses, beautifully renovated, and its narrow paved streets. Its Cathedral and 8 churches are an interesting journey though different styles of architecture from early Gothic to late Renaissance. Troyes and the Aube department have a unique collection of Stained Glass windows in Europe; they can be admired in Church Sainte Madeleine or Church Saint Martin Es Vignes, among other churches.
