Lapland

Lapland is the hometown of Santa Claus, half a million of reindeers and the 'Aurora Borealis' (the Northern Lights). Besides that, there are some 200,000 human inhabitants, half of them dispersed over the four major cities Rovaniemi (the provincial capital), Kemijärvi, Tornio and Kemi. The province of Lapland is mostly known for its astonishing beauty: lakes, brooks, rivers, mountains and woodlands combined with little villages and extended fields.

Rovaniemi offers some interesting museums and is an excellent city from which to explore the surroundings, where one can visit the Santa Park and the Ranua Wildlife Park. It is located 8 kilometres from the Artic Circle, the place to be when you want to see the Northern Lights for yourself.

A lot of festivals take place during the short summer. Make sure to participate in the Midsummer Festival of Light that takes place when Lapland turns into the land of the Midnight sun again. For the following three months, the sun remains permanently above the horizon.
