Blagoevgrad Located some 100 km. south of Sofia, Blagoevgrad is home to the American University in Bulgaria (AUBG), founded there in 1990 and the Bulgarian South Western University. At AUBG English is the language of instruction and evaluation procedures follow the US academic system. Most of the faculty are American scholars. Sights in town include the "Varosha" housing complex, which preserves the authentic sight of the houses and the streets from the end of ХVІІІ-th - the beginning of ХІХ-th century and the " Virgin Mary's Inauguration " church, dating back to 1844 - a monument having a national historical importance because of its phenomenal wall-paintings and the iconostasis.
