Coromandel

The Coromandel was once the scene of a full-on gold rush. You can bet that there's still plenty of gold in the heart of the hills. At the Coromandel Mining Museum, you'll see fascinating mineralogical displays. Out the back is New Zealand's first jailhouse. Other traces of gold mining history, including abandoned shafts, can be found in and around the township of Thames. The surrounding Hauraki Plains, home to a thriving dairy farming community, is also rich in Maori culture and heritage.

Travellers to the Coromandel often comment on the charming character of the colonial architecture - quaint historic cottages and shops provide a glimpse of life as it once was. Nowadays, the Coromandel is home to a vibrant arts community with a wealth of studios and galleries to explore and enjoy.
