Nauru One of the smallest countries in the woirld, Nauru consists of one atoll with a surrounding reef which is exposed at low tide, just 12 miles in circumference and just over 8 square miles. Most of the 10,000 population live on the narrow coastal belt. A small isolated Central Pacific island, it lies some 26 miles south of the Equator and is only accessible by private boat or via Air Nauru. Air Nauru arrives from Brisbane/Honiara on Monday and Thursday and from Nadi/Tarawa on Tuesday and Friday. The mining of phosphate has been the mainstay of the island's economy since the 1900s, providing the locals with a steady source of income. However funds from phosphate mining are virtually depleted and the island's fiscal resources are in dire straits.
