South-east

By Car

There are four major roads that can be used to explore the South-East, all radiating from Hobart. The Midlands Highway (A1) runs from Hobart up to Bridgewater, then crosses the Derwent and heads north for Launceston. The route is an old one, and is lined by a number of historic towns. Closest to Hobart is Pontville and Kempton. Other towns in the midlands are described in other sections.

The East Coast Highway (A3) crosses the Derwent River immediately and passes the Hobart Airport and Sorell, then bypasses the Tasman Peninsula and reaches the coast at Orford. This route also takes one out to the Richmond-Campaigna district (turn west before the airport).

South of Hobart, take the Southen Outlet (A6) to Kingston. The Huon Highway (A6), continues south to Huonville, Franklin, Geeveston and Dover, with access to the Hartz Mountains and the South-West National Park. Alternatively, you can take B68 to explore the townships along the Channel and access Bruny Island.

Finally, you can explore the Derwent Valley by travelling north-west from Hobart along the Lyell Highway (A10) past New Norfolk. The Mt Field National Park is reached by veering west along B62, and one can continue past Maydena into the South-West. The Lyell Highway continues to follow the Derwent to its source in the Central Highlands, before continuing on to the West Coast.
