Rockhampton

Rockhampton was founded in 1855, soon after the pioneering Archer Brothers settled at Gracemere, 6.5 kms to the west. It was named by Queensland's first Land Commissioner, Mr W. Wiseman, who was inspired by the rocks in the river.

A mini gold rush at Canoona - 48kms to the north - accelerated the establishment of the city. Gold discoveries at nearby Bouldercombe, Mount Wheeler and Mount Morgan ensured continued economic growth of the region. Grazing, mining, farming and meat processing quickly developed as the primary industries of the resource-rich area, and Rockhampton thrived as the service centre.

Gazetted as a city in 1902, 'Rocky' is today a prosperous community with a positive future.

The majesty of Rockhampton's historical architecture has captured the hearts of visitors for decades. Many of the buildings in the city area have gained notoriety for their historicity. Walking along the riverfront, Quay Street will be your backdrop and has been listed as an "historic streetscape" which is unique in Australia. Heritage listed buildings and structures with their unchanged character and historic charm are plentiful and are worth a look, they include: Customs House, post office, cathedrals, banks, business houses and homes.

To capture the charm of the city's history, the Heritage Village has been established and is a demonstration of the area's development.
