Udon Thani Udon Thani is a northeastern province covering an area of 15,589 square kilometres. The provincial capital is 562 kilometres northeast of Bangkok. Udon Thani is probably best known for its archaeological wonders, paramount among them the hamlet of the Ban Chiang where the world's first Bronze Age civilisation is believed to have flourished more than 5,000 years ago. Although Udon generally receives only a passing mention in guidebooks it is an important hub for surrounding villages and is a friendly and pleasant town with cheap hotels and restaurants a plenty. Udon is a place you visit for no particular reason but its low cost of living and relaxing pace.
