Myanmar Probably the most popular purchase in Myanmar is lacquerware, especially in Bagan where most of it is manufactured. Lacquerware is made into bowls, plates, boxes, cups, vases and many other items. Its quality is judged on its flexibility, the precision and colouring of the engravings. Another item you might like to pur-chase, is one of the beautiful painted umbrellas, htis, which are produced in Bassein and in Pindaya. Loose precious stones - like ruby, emerald and jade - and jewellery are sold in government shops or through licensed shops, especially in Yangon and Mandalay. Wood carvings and tapestries, as well as opium-weights, marionettes, gongs or longyi cloths are also worth investigating.
