Amarapura In 1783 Amarapura (“City of Immortals”) was the capital of Burma with a population of 200 000. Today fewer than 10 000 people (mainly cotton and silk weavers) live there. Sights include the palace ruins several pagodas and U Bein’s Bridge (a 200-year-old wooden footbridge spanning 3 300 ft/1 000 m). 7 mi/10 km south of Mandalay.
