LaosThe official language is Lao, the language of the largest ethnic group in Laos, which sounds similar to Thai. Instead of Sawadee-kap as in thailand they say Sabaidee. Many older people can speak quite a bit of French while the younger generation even after studying french in school for many years are better at English and very interested in practicing it. With a bit of both you can get around easily. Most of the younger generation speak English quite well or in varying degrees, it is becoming more and more common to find people of all ages who speak English quite well. Many tourists believe that Lao people speak English better than the Thai people.
