Lahore If you have not seen Lahore, you have not born yet. ( A famous Punjabi proverb). This busy metropolis has some of Pakistan’s best sites. Lahore has been the capital of the Moghul Empire and of that of the Sikhs. Lahore is located near the only border crossing with India that is currently open, in the Pakistani part of the Punjab. While you will see many Sikhs on the Indian side of the border, here the people are almost all Muslim. Many sights in Lahore go back to the times of the Moghul Emperors. Lahore has its own red Fort, one of the biggest Mosques in the subcontinent and some beautiful gardens. Lahore is a fun city to walk through. Be sure to visit some of the small markets and shops (the Anarkali bazaar will keep you busy) and spend time at the British-built Mall, and a relatively new and modern shopping area (Gulberg). If you’re in Lahore in late February or early March try to see the National Horse and Cattle Show Pakistan’s version of a rodeo featuring equestrian competitions camel and tent-pegging displays dancers from the provinces and music concerts. Lahore is located centrally in Pakistan and is an important travel hub. From Lahore you can go to Rawalpindi in the north, Peshawar near the Afghan border, or south to Karachi or Quetta.
