Manipur

Manipur has a few unique sights. It has the biggest fresh water lake in India, the Loktak Lake, which is a veritable miniature inland sea. In the lake there are small islands of floating weed on which the lake people and the dancing deer live.

Manipur is also well known as the homeland of the game of Polo. It is known locally as Sagol Kangjei, or horse hockey. While polo has become an elitist game everywhere else in the world, in Manipur it is played in the remotest villages, though the rules are slightly different from those of modern polo.

The so- called Manipur valley is really a plateau about 700 meteres high, watered by rivers threading out of the dark, mist-topped, ranges. Bright green fields stretch all the way to the distant mountains.
