Nanjing A good place to sample local specialties is the Jiangsu Restaurant. Nanjing pressed, salted duck is slathered with roasted salt, steeped in clear brine, baked dry and then kept under cover for some time; the finished product should have a creamy-colored skin and red, tender flesh. The vegetarian restaurant at Jiming Temple is worth visiting for view more than for its food. High on the hill overlooking Xuanwu Lake Park, it's very cheap and opens daily from 8am. to 5:30pm. If you look for cheaper food, you should go to the Ninghai Rd, Street stalls and restaurants there serve dumplings and steamed buns or you can get a bowl of noodles or Chinese pastries just out of oven. Like other big cities, you'll always see KFC and McDonald's outlets all over the town.
