Gallipoli The World War 1 battlefields known as Gallipoli are just 15 kms from Canakkale. It was here for eight and a half months in 1915 that men from every corner of the planet fought in an effort to open the Dardanelles which had been closed upon the entry of the Ottoman Empire, on the side of the Germans, into the war. A visit to the battlefields has become a "must do" pilgrimage for Australians and New Zealanders visiting Turkey. Daily tours of the battelfields operate from Çanakkale.
